How is Yoga Different than Exercise?

whole health Apr 10, 2023

Yoga is an ancient art. It is a vast science.

Often today, when we say 'Yoga', what comes to mind are the Asanas, or postures.

With consistent practice, Asanas bring physical health, but they are so much more than exercise and only a tiny part of what Yoga encompasses.

Exercise is typically done with physical fitness goals in mind. We move our bodies because we know it is good for us. It improves circulation and it keeps our hearts strong. We might do exercise to keep our body weight in check or to build muscle. We may turn to physical fitness for stress relief and to clear our mind. Moving the body is good for us on many levels.

In Asana practice we move the body from one posture to another. There are MANY different styles of Yoga. You can practice a flow of demanding and dynamic sequences. Or you can approach a practice with a restorative or gentle focus.

Many people come to Yoga with physical goals in mind, but inevitably a practice leads one to access deeper levels of the Self.

The Pay Off for Facing Your Fears

conscious living Apr 04, 2023

Coming back to Mexico where we used to live and surf almost everyday has been such a trip. We have been re-visiting many places and activities from our past and I have come back to them with new perspective. We had been away for three years.

Three years since I jumped on a surf board. I was dying to get back on a wave.

I knew it was going to be a challenge to get back out there. My surf muscles were out of condition. I was going to have to re-learn how to listen to the rhythm of the sea. I was going to have to face my fear of getting past the break when the waves crash hard.

There was a piece of me that was totally terrified of getting into the strong waves of the Southern Pacific Ocean. It was low tide and we were at a surf point that has lots of rocks and sea urchins. The waves were not huge, but still packing a punch as they crashed on the rocks and there was no getting to the waves without going through that part of the journey.

I gathered my nerve, asked my hubby if I could...

How Long Should We Hold a Yoga Pose?

mindful movement Mar 28, 2023

The Asanas, or postures, have become the main focus of Yoga in the modern world. However, the postures are really just a tool to help us develop awareness.

Yes, they give physical benefits but the deeper reason for practice is to grow our understanding of Who Are We and to prepare us for meditation.

How long you hold a pose depends on how long you can hold your awareness. Over time, and with practice we learn to sustain our awareness and we focus for longer periods of time. In the beginning, our focus is fleeting.

What exactly are we focusing on?

The Asanas give us an opportunity to connect to the body and breath. We use the framework of the body and the rhythm of the breath to anchor us to the present moment. As we pass our attention from the top of the head to the tips of the toes we begin to notice ourselves; our inner world.

As we observe the coming and going of breath we begin to be aware of the coming and going of thoughts and emotions and sensations. We begin to see our own...

Life Lessons from a day of Skiing

enjoy the ride! Mar 13, 2023

Last weekend we hit the slopes and were blessed with a day of endless, powdery snow. I drove up with my son, but he took off with his friends leaving me some much needed alone time.

I was able to ski at my own pace. I did not have to think about anything except the feeling of riding these beautiful slopes. I choose the runs I wanted to take. I paused whenever I was called to appreciate the majestic views around me. I let my heart lead me from moment to moment.

The quiet time coupled with the gorgeous conditions gave me precious time for reflection. I saw many parallels between skiing and life and I want to share them with you.

When you go up to ski you never know what kind of conditions you are going to find. Some days you get up there and it is icy and slick. Other days it is a slushy mess. Every now and again, there is a day with fresh powder.

But even when snow conditions are perfect current weather can throw a curve ball. You can be met with fog, or blizzard like conditions...

Can Choosing your Words Change your Life?

conscious living Feb 26, 2023

Words are powerful and we often let them fly off our our tongues without giving much thought to how they will create an impact. We babble off any old thing that comes to mind. Our thoughts jump from one thing to the next and many times lead us astray.

Until we discover how to observe our inner world, we don’t see we have choice and we miss the opportunity to choose our thoughts and words carefully.

Yoga showed me I could pay attention to my own thoughts as a witness. With the practice of mindful movement and breath awareness, I began to see my own thought patterns. My Yoga practice made me aware of what was going on inside.

When we become aware of our thoughts, we have choice. When we are aware, we can put the brakes on those automatic patterns and reactions. We gain the ability to shift our thoughts and decide what we want to say to ourselves and to others.

This is a powerful.

How many times have you said something you regret? How many times have you caught yourself saying...

When the Body Talks and How to Interpret What it is Saying

mind body health Feb 20, 2023

The last few weeks I have been having a roller coaster of a time with my teenage kids. If you are a parent you know this stage of raising them comes with its unique challenges. They still need your guidance, but they don't want to hear it.

And because I am learning more about healthy boundaries, I have been insisting on clear communication and taking time to have conversations that bring deeper understanding.

We have been having quite a few of these conversations lately. Often we get tired of saying the same things over and over again, so we give up. But I am convinced that healthy boundaries involve consistency.

One night last week, the kids overstepped their boundaries and came home past their curfew. I was so angry and frustrated, but it was late and I was tired so I did not say what I needed to say. Instead, I went to bed stuffing my feelings down.

The next day, I woke up with laryngitis! And it hit me like a tonne of bricks. I knew I was getting a message from my body. I Iooked...

Why I No Longer Teach Counter Postures

whole health Feb 12, 2023

When I first learned Yoga I was under the impression it was important to ‘counter-pose’. This means if you did a back bend then you would do a forward bend to follow up. If you did a backbend then you should do a forward bend to balance out that movement.

At the time it made logical sense. I was stretching in one direction and then my body needed to stretch in the other direction. At one point on my journey, someone told me this was a bad idea because it was like bending a credit card back and forth; implying that it would cause weakness and we would break in half.

In that moment, I thought it was a ridiculous analogy because we are nothing like a credit card!

However, over the years I have come to see there is no need to counter stretch. I also now see why pushing and pulling our bodies has a detrimental effect.

As a matter of a fact, in the approach to Yoga which I practice and teach now, we don’t do any stretching at all!

What!? Yoga that doesn’t involve...

Why I Offer “Pay What you Wish” for my 10 Day Self Care Challenge

health and healing Feb 07, 2023

From the moment I discovered these healing arts, such as Yoga and Meditation, I felt drawn to share them. These practices give us access to our own innate healing ability and once you learn them, they are free to use.

The more people that access and practice them, I believe, the less pain and suffering there is in the world.

I was lucky to travel and did a lot of deep searching. I came across wonderful teachers and practices that have helped me on my own healing and wellness journey. Through these practices I found a deep connection to inner peace, health and harmony.

I feel lucky to have had the chance to find these teachers and these practices. It is my life’s mission to share these practices and teachings with others in hopes they, too, can feel the benefits.

Often when people come across these teachings they find reasons why they can't dive into them. They feel they don’t have the money to invest. Or maybe they fear what they will have to face on the journey. Maybe...

Don’t Spend Another Year with Back Pain

heal yourself Feb 02, 2023

Due to the nature of my work, I often hear from people who are in pain.  Often these people have tried surgery or medications without relief. Sometimes these things they have tried even create more problems.  Pain patterns can get established and become debilitating with one issue stacking on top of the next.

At times it might feel like pain is inescapable.

Many people with chronic pain believe they will have to live with it forever. I meet many people who have literally tried EVERYTHING. Often they are at the end of their rope and have lost hope.

It is very rewarding to watch people get relief of pain through this approach to Yoga. There are many traditional healing practices that touch places modern medical science does not. Through the work I do, I have been witness to incredible experiences where people get free from the health issues they were suffering with for years, and sometimes decades.

One common benefit people get with this work is relief from back pain. I have...
