Due to the nature of my work, I often hear from people who are in pain. Often these people have tried surgery or medications without relief. Sometimes these things they have tried even create more problems. Pain patterns can get established and become debilitating with one issue stacking on top of the next.
At times it might feel like pain is inescapable.
Many people with chronic pain believe they will have to live with it forever. I meet many people who have literally tried EVERYTHING. Often they are at the end of their rope and have lost hope.
It is very rewarding to watch people get relief of pain through this approach to Yoga. There are many traditional healing practices that touch places modern medical science does not. Through the work I do, I have been witness to incredible experiences where people get free from the health issues they were suffering with for years, and sometimes decades.
One common benefit people get with this work is relief from back pain. I have worked with MANY people who are cringing and winging in pain when they arrive to their first class and then within a few months of practice can walk and sit and be active without pain.
How does this approach to healing help?
Often we think of Yoga as stretching. Many people even hurt themselves in Yoga classes by pushing and pulling. The approach to movement that I share with my students is less about stretching and more about awareness.
This practice is about paying attention to the relationships within the body. Though building body awareness, we start to notice habits. We begin to be aware of the places we are clenching. Through looking at the body in simple seated, standing or reclining postures, we start to build a relationship to the body.
We learn to feel. What we discover is within the body there is a rhythm. If we have the courage to look inside we find breath. This coming and going of our vital life force helps us to remember this healing force inside us.
It is powerful.
We start to let go of tension. We start to let energy travel through our body where it has been blocked or obstructed. We help open new pathways by staying curious and by exploring gentle movements and relaxation techniques.
Is this easy work?
No! It is difficult to pay attention to what we are feeling and not react.
But we are lucky if we come across a practice that will help us develop attention, focus, compassion and give us access to our innate healing ability. If we practice consistently, we get the benefits.
That is what this Yoga is: an ancient, time tested health and healing science. It takes time to establish a practice and learn the basics, but anyone can do it.
