Often when we talk about Yoga, we mean ‘doing' postures. However, Yoga is a vast science with many branches. You may or may not have heard of Karma Yoga before. One shining example of a Karma Yogi is Mahatma Ghandi. He worked selflessly for the wellbeing of the people of India.
Practicing Karma Yoga means doing your duty without attachment. Karma Yoga means we do our best. We give our gifts. We think of others. We offer up our service as devotion to something greater than ourselves.
Karma Yoga is SELFLESS SERVICE.
Perhaps Karma Yoga can be thought of like doing a good deed but it is deeper than that.
This practice is based in understanding who you truly are.
Not everyone is a leader or activist.
The first step in selfless service is KNOWING yourself.
Who are you?
What are your gifts?
What are you called to do?
Where do you like to put your energy?
This is your DHARMA. Dharma is your personal mission. Knowing your purpose is part of the process.
Once you have a sense of what you are here to do, the next part is doing it without expectation of what you will get in return. You do it because you are called to do it. You give your heart and soul to doing the best job you can and surrender the outcome to a higher power.
Karma Yoga is to surrender to a divine plan.
The irony is even though the intention is to be in service to others, we end up being filled up in the process.
If you have never thought much about giving service, try to wrap your head around it. It’s interesting.
Most of us have been conditioned to work for money. To think of a career in terms of security or status. Our culture and education trains us away from listening to our inner voice. Maybe you can't even hear yours anymore.
If you are already doing what you love, congratulations ~ you already know how this feels!
This is what we are here to do. Find and follow our true purpose and give our gifts back to the world.
There comes great JOY and satisfaction in living a life of service.
What are your gifts? Skills? Interests? Talents?
Share them.
Follow your heart.
It will likely lead you to service. You will find yourself giving the world exactly what you are good at.
The more you give it freely, the more you get in return.
Give it a try for the rest of 2022.
Whatever you do for the next several weeks, do it in service. Give your best in any given situation.
What are you good at? ~ Offer it up.
Maybe make a soup for a neighbour. Give someone a ride. Call a friend. Pitch in for a community project. Volunteer your time. Offer to shovel someone’s driveway. Help build a community garden! Or in your job, be your best at it.
Just whatever you are doing in your day anyways. Play with the idea of coming to it with the intention that what you are doing is to be of service. Even taking care of yourself if that is what you need.
Whatever action you are taking, give the most you can with the pure intention of sharing your gifts. You may be surprised at the joy and peace it brings you.
May your holiday season be filled with Joy and Love.
