The work I do, is a return to Self. A remembering of the way back.
We listen to the body as a tool to journey inside and reconnect with our centre.
In the work I do, I find people need reminding how to feel their body. We have become disconnected from ourselves. So, how do we get into our bodies? How do we start feeling again? How to move from unaware to awareness.
This takes time. Building a relationship with the body takes practice. We must be willing to listen to the body. At first its voice is far off. A whisper. We might try to feel down to our toes and intellectually we know they are there. However, to really FEEL them, do we?
We have twenty six bones in each foot. Between these bones there is the potential for movement. The design is brilliant. It is our connection to the earth. The foot is the foundation of our body.
And the hands! Think about your hands! What they do! They bring food to our mouths. They hug loved ones. They wash dishes. They paint, or maybe play piano. Or maybe they tend to your garden. They can provide a reassuring touch an old friends shoulder, or excite a lover to orgasm.
These limbs! They connect to the spine through ball joints. Networks of nerves. Connective tissue. Fascia. The spinal cord and the brain. How many of us pay attention to our miraculous bodies?
We can be very conscious of our body, or not at all. We can experience the most subtle sensation or numb ourselves to the point where we can induce physical pain on ourselves through self harm.
Over our lifetime, we form a relationship with our body. Often as children we are told sit still. Or stand up straight. We have a feeling in the body. An urge to move, or shift. An impulse. Often an adult interferes. Tells us to override that feeling and listen to THEM.
Then of course there are more traumatic ways we become disconnected from our bodies. Other people judgements, comments. Unwanted touch, or attention.
Or maybe our jobs required us to endure a static position; uncomfortable, or repetitive. And we have this pressure to earn money, so we override our body and carry on.
And look at school. It is torture for children who want to be physically active. We are asked to sit in a chair all day and only use the mind: this is not in connection with Self.
We have to re-establish and grow this relationship with ourselves. We are multi faceted individuals. We have a mind, but we also have a body and a spirit.
If we only use our brains, we are losing touch with the other parts of ourselves. We may deny these different aspects, however at some point they start saying, “Hey, pay attention, I am here too!!”
I love helping people find their way back to themselves.
It can be a rocky road. Sometimes we have to face some old buried away pain patterns. But as we get closer to ourselves again there is solace. A feeling of coming home.
A return to who we were before life cause all these fragmented pieces. If we are lucky we get a chance to become whole again. We find ways to bring back a sense of unity. To yoke mind, body and soul in harmony.
We discover ways to not work against ourselves.
We learn to pay attention to all parts of us.
Yoga is a Path to ourselves. Anyone can take this journey. Don’t be scared, even if at first it feels a bit risky, the pay off is quickly felt and more than sufficient to keep us going.
