I feel very strongly about this.
We have the capacity to heal ourselves. I see it time and time again in the work I do. Oftentimes people come to me for help with their health issues after having tried many different treatments, medications and even surgery. They are at their wits end.
Doctors have not been able to help them. Specialists have not been able to get them results. No one has been able to solve their problem.
They decide to try Yoga and with consistent practice they get better. It is amazing to watch.
I understand people have doubts. Many people are skeptical about alternative ways to health and wellness. That's fair. We have been conditioned to think the answers are found in experts; in people who wear a white coat.
We are raised in ways that disconnect us from our body and from our intuition.
We have lost knowledge about which plants have healing properties. We have lost touch with foods that heal. If we get sick we book an appointment with our family doctor, or we end up at urgent care having waited too long to seek out a solution.
There are many ways to heal ourselves. We can use food, herbs, touch, movement, relaxation techniques, processing of emotional pain, re-connecting to nature, self-reflection, rest and many other holistic approaches.
With our current medical model we are taught to tackle health issues by band-aiding the symptom rather than getting to the root of the problem. Our modern medical system most often prescribes a drug to eliminate the manifestation of the dis-ease, but doesn't treat the cause.
It is bizarre to me that when visiting a doctor it is rare to have any discussion about diet, or stress. Doctors rarely ask about lifestyle choices such as exercise, communication in relationships, fulfillment at work and other factors that deeply affect our well-being.
We know the mind and body are intricately related.
Even our regulating bodies such as the CDC and the NIH list study after study confirming the root cause of almost ALL disease is stress. Yet, we continue to mask the clues our body is giving us by rushing right to a pill. The drugs we are prescribed most often have side effects and cause other challenges for the body even if they do a good job of eliminating the original symptom.
It is a weird approach to health. I just can't stay quiet any longer.
I have been working in the health and wellness industry for over 25 years. I have had a mindfulness practice for over 25 years. I have not had to see a doctor since the birth of my daughter almost 16 years ago. Maybe that is a coincidence. Maybe I have good genes. But honestly, I think it has to do with taking care of my health from a preventative and holistic approach.
I choose carefully what I eat. I move my body. I get out in nature. I make a practice of drinking enough water. I have daily rituals of gratitude. I write and reflect everyday. I ensure I am nourishing social connections with friends and family. I get out for sunshine and fresh air. I do cold dips in the sea, river and lakes. I walk in the forest. I look up at the sky. I pray.
I have been feeling amazing since I learned I can take care of my own health.
I believe it is our responsibility. It is within our power to take care of ourselves.
It is just we are conditioned to hand over that power to an outside source; an authority.
We live in a culture where taking care of ourselves is considered selfish. We are taught to look after others. It is rare to be asked to think of what we need and to be encouraged go for it.
When I teach, I encourage people to listen to their body and follow it's requests. For most people, this is the first time in a LONG time that someone has said this to them. Maybe it is the only time they have been invited to follow their instincts.
I like to tell this story to exemplify how this disconnection from listening to our body begins. One day, I was at my daughter's elementary school and observing the daycare class getting ready to go for a walk outside. You could tell one of the little girls needed to go to the washroom. The teacher was overwhelmed with taking care of ALL of the children. She was not picking up on this need of this little girl. It was overlooked, and the little girl had to override her feelings and just keep up with the group.
This is just a small example of how we learn to override the requests of the body. But if we look in our own lives we can see many example of this. We have lost connection with ourselves. We don't rest when we are tired. We don't eat when we are hungry. Or we eat when we are already full. We follow our bosses schedule instead of listening to our own instincts.
We live in a culture of disconnection and this has led to dis-ease in our bodies and minds.
It is possible to re-establish this connection with ourselves. It is possible to make friends with the body again. We can learn to listen to the messages our bodies give us. It does require slowing down. It does require commitment and practice. But it is possible.
When we do this, health is renewed. Health is our natural state. If we return to listening to ourselves, and learning different ways to renew, and restore harmony we can experience WHOLE health. I get to witness this time and time again with my clients. And I have experienced it myself.
Even if you have a complex health challenge, it is possible to get relief. Even if you find yourself in deep disconnection, chronic pain and despair, there is a way back. It isn't a quick fix. There is no magic pill. However, with consistent practice you can return to a state of health and wellness.
I LOVE helping people find the way back to feeling great. Reach out anytime if you want some support and guidance. It is my passion and honour to share these ancient teachings.
