One of my students made a comment last week that really stood out for me.
She asked me: ‘How do I manage to do all the things I do, and STILL find time for myself?’
I thought sharing my tricks might help others. I know a lot of people who struggle to fit everything in, including Self Care and especially the things that bring them Joy.
I will admit, it has taken me a long while to figure this stuff out. I used to put myself last EVERY time and feel like I could NEVER fit in all the things I had to do in the day.
HOW DID I MAKE THIS SHIFT AND FIND MORE TIME?
There are four main ways I have enough time to do everything I want, including rest and having fun!
The first idea might sound impossible at first but I can reassure you it is. I don’t watch TV.
Like at all.
Okay, I might watch a comedy special if my husband asks me to, but that is usually on his computer, and I literally don’t know how to use/work my TV in the family room.
I do let some of my time slip away into social media. I justify time there by telling myself that is how I stay in touch with the world. I do limit my consumption and know mostly it is WASTING my time. Watching screens is a time suck! We can give away hours of our days to mindless content that adds zero value to our life.
The second place I don’t give my time away is in negativity. I do not let people complain to me and I do not let myself get caught in conversations that are dragging me down. I have given up saving people and I don’t waste any time trying to change people. I guard my energy very carefully and don’t let it get zapped by anyone.
The third secret to stretching time is waking up early. Most people cringe at the thought of getting up at 5am, but it’s a game changer. This is a magic time of day where you have complete control of what you do. No one else is there to ask anything of you. This is the magic time of the day where you get to fill your bucket. Get everything done that matters to you. By 9am, you have the day to play or work or whatever else you can dream of that will nourish you.
The last tip I will tell you is that it is important to put yourself first. That might sound selfish, but if you do you will have a tonne more energy. Once you do everything that you want it is much easier to be productive and offer others your time or energy. You are full power when you take care of yourself first. If you let life drag you down by doing all the chores and helping everyone before you help yourself you will run out of steam REALLY quick. It is important to charge your battery so you can make full use of the day.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention eating right and getting enough sleep. You can have all the time in the world, but if you are feeling like crap, you can’t utilize that precious time. To help with with my vitality, I fill my body with healthy, whole food every chance I get. I get to sleep at a regular time and give myself lots of time to unwind in the evenings.
