Tracking our Habits

living well Mar 01, 2024

We are a couple months into the New Year and it is a good time to take stalk. Many people, at the start of the year, set in motion some wonderful intentions. It’s a great idea to set goals. There’s no knocking putting our intentions out there. Good for you!

Now, the other part of reaching our goals, or accomplishing our dreams is the action taking part!

Goals are in the future. Our daily habits are what we do today to take ourselves in the direction of our dreams.

Let's take stalk. Are we willing to pay attention to what we are doing from moment to moment? Can we ask ourselves to look honestly about how we are spending our time?

I would argue time is our most precious resource. We all have the same amount of time in the day.

How do we make use of our time?

What are the habits or actions that lead to what we want?

If our goal is around health and wellness, we can break down what actions lead to health and wellness.

Health hinges on eating right, moving our bodies, making time for rest and relaxation, social connections, fresh air, respecting our boundaries, and perhaps there are a few other ideas to consider.

If we know what makes us feel our best, we can take stock of if we are indeed including those actions day to day.

It is easy to think about what we want. We all know what it takes to get what we want. However, taking action is actually what gets us what we want!

I challenge you this week to participate in habit tracking. Pay attention to how you are spending your time. What choices are you making?

While you explore your habits, remember judgment is not a part of this exercise. There is no use in criticizing yourself. Just get clear. Start to understand how you are spending your precious time.

If you realize you are losing time in activities that bring you absolutely no benefit you can decide to stop participating in those activities. If you realize you are benefiting from one of your habits - celebrate that and keep at it.

This suggestion to track our habits is for clarity. Once you understand where you are spending your precious time you can more easily refine your habits. This first part is key! Get familiar with what you are doing in your day.

Take a whole week and keep track. Write it down so you can see it clearly.

My morning routine is a crucial and powerful part of my day. It took me a long time to establish my morning practice. Now, it is a habit. I wake up, write, do my Yoga and meditate. These are habits that serve me!

Currently I am doing my own inventory of habits as I have a goal of growing my impact. One of the habits I know is important is in creating content. I am committed to writing a blog post each week as well as recording a podcast, and creating a video.

As I track my habits, I can see that one thing I do instead of getting down to content creation is I distract myself with house work. By paying attention, I have realized I can be more efficient in how I manage these responsibilities and my time.

Of course housework is a necessary part of life! However, by paying attention to how I am using my time, my habits, I see, at times, I am using housework as an excuse as to why I can’t write, or record.

This awareness gives me a chance to clarify what is important to me right now. I am committed to sharing these teachings and practices which have helped me so much. If that is my goal, then the actions I have to focus on is creating content to share with people.

Recognizing I am putting off the action I have to take by tinkering around the house has helped me to put my goal back at the forefront. I can easily clean my house on the weekend in one focused chunk of time.

This choice became available because I was paying attention to my habits. If you pay attention to how you spend your time, you will see places you can refine how you are using this precious resource.

Remember, leave out the judgment. Just get clear and course correct.

You can achieve your goals and dreams.

It is your daily habits and consistent action that gets you there.

I am rooting for you!
