EEEEEK! Scary right? To take that leap? To trust?
Our nervous system is designed to look for the threat. When we don’t know what is going to happen, the possibility of the unknown, it feels like we might die.
So we stop ourselves.
Just when we are going to take the risk, we hesitate.
I am grateful I took a few risks when I was young.
Like in this photo where I am falling backwards in full faith that this rope tied around my ankles would save me from plummeting to my death.
I think in our younger years we are more willing to take risks.
We are oblivious to the dangers until we get burnt and then we become more cautious.
But often these fears get in the way of us growing and learning. The way we stop ourselves from moving forward creates stagnation; blocks.
I get to see people play with this feeling all the time when they think about doing this inner work. When people know they have to go inside they panic.
What will I find?
Can I handle it?
All these questions arise.
Doubt.
Thinking the worst. Remembering the pain.
Our nervous system kicks us right back into fight and flight.
It is automatic.
It’s tough to get out of this loop. I feel for us. We have all been traumatized in one way or another and we get triggered into this state of fight and flight more often than we wish.
That is why I love doing this healing work. It liberates us. We can learn to re-program our brain.
Instead of seeing the risk as something that might cause us harm, we can open ourselves to see it as an opportunity. We have the potential to heal ourselves if we can just find the courage to face that feeling.
The moment when you feel that panic, the key to take you out of that loop is to stay with the feeling. Be with it.
Notice the body. The body can anchor you. The breath can help you to feel the here and NOW instead of going into trigger mode which will shut you down.
By paying attention to the body and breath you can observe the inner working of your nervous system and with attention you can re-wire these patterns.
This liberates you from being in a state of fight and flight and allows you to drop into BEING; allows you to feel peace, wholeness, ease.
Who doesn’t want that?
I am not saying that dropping backwards on this bungy jump was easy for me. Nor is it easy to face our fears. But it is the place of healing.
This is what a practice is for. To develop awareness of body and breath, so that over time, from moment to moment you are more in touch with the ability to be present. If you can become aware of your own reactions you can develop equanimity and let it pass.
When these patterns are not re-enforced they become weaker. You can train yourself to feel safe. To believe that the rope will catch you.
The more your practice taking these risks, facing what scares you, the more you train your brain to be calm in the face of the unknown and this builds that feeling of trust and safety.
It is understandable that we react. Our pain is valid. We were hurt. Let down. We must acknowledge the feeling. But we must not let it stop us from moving forward.
Take the next step. You want to grow. You want to heal.
You want to thrive. Take the leap. It is worth it. Life is for living and you know you want to live in your full power.
I see you and I feel you. I know you want to heal.
You have it in you.
Hear the call and face your fear.
